How Hypnotherapy Supports Your Healthy Eating and Weight Loss Goals.

Are you struggling to lose weight? You are not alone.
About two thirds of adults in the UK aged over 16 are obese or overweight. It’s a major public health problem in the UK and globally, associated with life-limiting conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. And of course this can all affect mental health, self-esteem and quality of life.
There’s evidence to show how hypnotherapy can help with a range of physical and mental health conditions as well as change the way people behave and their habits. Hypnotherapy for weight loss uses guided therapy to help shift thoughts, behaviours and habits related to weight. There is some evidence that hypnotherapy shows benefits—but results vary from person to person. Your motivation is definitely key.
This should all be relatively simple, shouldn’t it? Although there are different views of how to eat healthily (calorie-controlled, paleo, keto, etcetera!) the fact is that our weight isn't simply a matter of knowing what to eat. If it were, most of us would find losing weight very straightforward. We know that vegetables are good for us. We know that eating too much highly processed food isn't particularly helpful. We know that exercise matters.
But there is a huge chasm between knowing in general what we ought to do, and doing it!
Food is tied up with pleasure, reward, comfort, habit, memory, stress, boredom and emotion. Sometimes we eat when we aren't hungry. Sometimes we find ourselves reaching for something almost automatically. Sometimes we can be extremely disciplined all day and then find ourselves standing in the kitchen in the evening eating something we had promised ourselves we wouldn't.
And this is where hypnotherapy for weight loss can be useful.
Hypnotherapy for weight loss aims to influence some of your subconscious thoughts and beliefs and challenge your established behaviours around weight management. In a deeply relaxed yet focused state, we can work together to reframe the patterns that have been holding you back and strengthen the ones that will carry you forward.
Now your mind and your approach to eating are as unique as your thumbprint! This means your treatment is also unique, but here are some of the specific ways hypnotherapy can help.
Hypnotherapy to lose weight
Reduce stress and anxiety that lie behind comfort eating and over-eating. By calming the nervous system, the urge to reach for food as a coping mechanism often reduces naturally.
Rewire habits. Break bad habits and start new healthier habits — and stick to them! By working at the subconscious level, the new patterns become more automatic and the old ones lose their grip.
Boost motivation.
Truthfully you need some motivation for hypnotherapy to work in the first place, but it can boost and help sustain motivation during what is normally a long-term process.
Impulse control.
Strengthen your ability to pause between the urge and the action, learn to recognise and deal with cravings, and sometimes to adopt alternative measures.
Reduce cravings.
Your automatic response to and desire for certain food can be altered. We can even introduce an aversion to certain foods and drinks if necessary, although most people don’t want to do this.
Future rehearsal.
It can be very helpful to picture yourself the way you want to be. It becomes easier to work towards a goal when your mind has already experienced the positive feelings and behaviours of having achieved it through imagination in hypnosis.
Improve self-control.
This may spill into other areas of your life too. Greater self-mastery around food often improves confidence in other areas of life.
Use REBT to tackle underlying beliefs which may lie behind over-eating.
Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy helps identify and challenge the unhelpful and limiting beliefs which keep the cycle going, replacing them with more flexible and helpful beliefs.
Inner Child therapy
This gentle but sometimes transformative therapy which can help release old childhood wounds and experiences which contribute to the wrong eating choices. Early experiences can shape our relationship with food in ways we may not fully realise. Gently revisiting and resolving these can free you to make different choices now.
Self-acceptance.
Harsh self-criticism can fuel over-eating. Encouraging a kinder inner voice creates the emotional foundation for sustainable change. It might even be that what you need is greater acceptance of yourself — perhaps you have been worrying too much about self-control or self-image.
So, if your question is ‘Can hypnosis help you lose weight?’ the answer for many people is ‘yes’, especially when it is combined with genuine motivation and a willingness to explore what sits beneath the surface. Hypnotherapy does not replace healthy eating or movement, but complements and supports those choices, by aligning your conscious intentions and behaviour with your unconscious patterns.
